Winter Break Reflections, I Have a Dream, and Literacy Fun

The students finished typing their winter break reflections last week.  On this assignment, they were to write 8-10 sentences about their break.  Their paragraph was to include a topic sentence and closing sentence.  After writing and editing their work, the students typed and added a border and clipart to their work.  I hope you enjoy their hard work!

Last week we also began talking about Martin Luther King, Jr., whose birthday we celebrated on Monday.  As the students were talking, someone wondered whether or not Martin Luther King would think we were still living out his dream today.  A great conversation followed in which the students thought that just because you reach your dream doesn't mean that you can stop working on it.  They all agreed that working to be inclusive certainly takes work.

For this writing piece, I asked the students to write about a dream they have for our world.  As you can see, the responses vary quite a bit.  I think they are wonderful written from the heart.  Enjoy!

This week in literacy, we continue to dive deeper in our thinking and are beginning to notice patterns about the main character.  The students are working to add even more examples from the text to support their big ideas.

On Friday the students will begin working in a book club group.  While they will still be reading independently in the class, they will be working with other students while reading the same book.  Please see the bottom of the literacy homework to learn more about this.
