Baseball Day and Bay Animal Riddles

Baseball Day in the third grade is just so much fun!  From the hot dogs, ice cream sandwiches, chips and more to Wiffle Ball on the field, these kids know how to have a good time.  

Last week we finished our social studies unit on Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay.  Here are the Chesapeake Bay Animal riddles the students created after researching an animal in the Bay.  See if you can guess any of the animals.  Enjoy!

This week in literacy, the students are exploring different nonfiction text structures.  They are thoroughly enjoying the Who Would Win series to practice comparing and contrasting.  

Chesapeake Bay Animal Riddles and Literacy

In social studies, the students have been researching animals that live in the Chesapeake Bay.  They are taking their research and making an "I Spy" riddle about their animal.  I can't wait to show you their finished products next week!  It has been so exciting seeing their creativity come to life!  

 In literacy, we have spent a lot of time taking notes after reading nonfiction using a boxes and bullets (main idea and details) organizer.  This week, we began discussing other text structures for nonfiction texts.  (Yes, there are more!) This information will be extremely helpful to the students as they get older and learn to read and take notes from nonfiction and informational texts. (Think middle school, upper school, and college!)  So far we have talked about sequential order and will be discussing comparing and contrasting, problem and solution, and cause and effect.  We are talking about key words in nonfiction/informational texts that alert the reader as to what type of text structure it is.  Tricky work, but they are doing a great job! 

 After taking notes, each student paired up with a new partner to share what they learned.
